Opened in the fall of 2008, the new Indianapolis International Airport includes a new terminal building, new parking facilities and new interstate access via I-70. The airport is just 15 minutes from downtown with direct access from Interstate 70 just west of Interstate 465. A 40-gate terminal building features outstanding architecture, the ability to accept international arrivals, and capacity to handle growth from the previous airport's 8.2 million annual passengers. The graceful terminal design features a roofline as high as 82 feet from the floor, with glass and tubular steel construction. The terminal building has 1.2 million square foot of space, with greatly enhanced shopping and dining opportunities. The crossroads of the new terminal is Civic Plaza, a circular space under a 200-foot-diameter skylight and a view of the downtown Indianapolis skyline that is the center of shopping, dining and events. More than 17,000 parking spaces are available, including the garage and surface lots. A new, five-story parking garage can accommodate 5,900 cars and 1,200 rental cars, which is more than three times as many as the previous garage. In addition to the main features, the airport includes a program of integrated art commissioned for the airport, a new Air Traffic Control Tower and a new airport fire station.
